Excellence
Police Major George Heeter wouldn’t change anything about his time at Notre Dame. Except, maybe, joining the University earlier.
“I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just that I never get tired of Notre Dame. I spend a lot of hours here. I never get tired of showcasing our University and giving other people the opportunity to see what Notre Dame offers,” Heeter said.
Following a career with the St. Joseph County Police Department, Heeter has spent more than 20 years at Notre Dame, serving in the role of special events and dignitary protection for the past 15 years. What does that mean? Well, it means a lot is on his shoulders, especially during football season when Heeter can be found in lockstep with Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Marcus Freeman on gameday.
“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside some of the hardest-working and loyal people I know. Coach Freeman, his staff, and the Athletics staff are truly amazing. And, let’s not forget our student-athletes. I can’t say enough about the players and the sacrifices and commitment they show to the program and to academics day in and day out. It simply amazes me. I have so much respect for their work ethic, and they are inspiring to me.”
Excellence is part of the fabric of the Notre Dame Police Department, Heeter said. It means consistently keeping the highest standards and maintaining a commitment to service.
“Our job is first and foremost about safety. Excellence in my role is when I put in long hours and put together a plan for a major event or high-profile guest on campus, when, at the end of the day, it’s safe and doesn’t negatively impact anyone in any way. That’s success.”
And, for Heeter, that success matters most because of the people—especially the students who will carry a culture of excellence beyond campus.
“I think, most of all, I’m proud to have the opportunity to meet and mentor some of the brightest young people and future leaders of tomorrow. Our people, our pride, and our family are my favorite parts of this place.”
